Bridging of Speakers – 2023 Guide

The meaning of bridging is to link one thing with another. This bridging of speakers refers to the combination of speakers with each other with the help of a device known as an amplifier. In this article, we will discuss the bridging of speakers.

Why to Bridge Speakers:

There are multiple reasons for the bridging of speakers. Some reasons are discussed below

The first reason that leads to the bridging of speakers is that you need to cover a big area so that is why you need to bridge the speakers together. For example a large room with a high roof in which you cannot hear the sound properly.

The second reason that is a cause of the bridging of speakers is that you are having a party and you need a big music system for that this reason also urges to bridge the speakers together.

The third one which due to which the bridging of speakers is done is that people do not want to change the volume individually.

What is an Amplifier? :

An amplifier is an electric device that increases the power of the sound. There are two most common types of the amplifier used:

  • Stereo Amplifier
  • HIFI Amplifier

Stereo Amplifier:

It is an amplifier that turns the low power sound into high power sound.

HIFI Amplifier:

It is an amplifier that reproduces the sound to the full range of audible frequencies.

Bridging of Speakers in Series or Parallel?

The question which is clicked in our mind is how bridging of the speaker is done? Whether the bridging of the speaker will be done in series or in parallel. This depends on the resistance of the speakers. The resistance of the speaker is always written at the back of the speakers. Normally the resistance of the speakers is 4 ohms to 8 ohms. If this is not written on the backside of the speakers try to find it on the papers of speakers in the specification section. Now we came to the thing that resistance of the speakers decides whether to wire the speakers will be wired in parallel or series.

If the resistance of the speakers is less than the 8 ohms then it is safe to wire the speakers in series.

If the resistance of the speakers is 8 ohms or more then 8 ohms you should wire the speaker in parallel

Bridging of Speakers In Series:

It is safe to wire your speakers in series if the resistance of the speakers is less than 8 ohm. Because if you have the speaker of 4 ohms then the resistance in the series will become 8 ohms and if you have one speaker of 5 ohms and other speakers of 6 ohms then the total resistance will be of 11 ohms. Most of the amplifiers work normally with the load of 6 to 16 ohms.

Bridging of Speakers In Parallel:

When the resistance of the speakers will be 8 ohms or more than 8 ohms it is more likely to bridge the speakers in a parallel way. For example, there are two speakers and the resistance of both speakers is 8 ohms and then if we wire them in a parallel way then the total resistance will become 4 ohms. And now if you have speakers of 10 ohms and 14 ohms then in parallel wiring it becomes 12 ohms of resistance. Apparently, it is known as parallel series just because the wiring is in the parallel form. The negative and positive are parallel to each other. In parallel wiring, the resistance of two or more speakers added and then divided to the number of the speakers.

Effects of Bridging of Speakers on Amplifier:

When we add an extra speaker on the amplifier it increases the load of the amplifier but the amplifier copes with it. For example, if four persons are sitting in the car and we add another one it increases the load but the car can cope with it same is the case with the amplifier. But if we put more load on it speakers will work but on a low sound. If we put more load on the amplifier it will stop working. In other words today most of the amplifiers come with the limiting circuit that resists the amplifier from working if the amplifier is overloaded. Some of the amplifiers come with the fuse that fuse will blow up if the amplifier gets overloaded and save the amplifier from blowing up.

Bridging of Multiple Speakers:

We can also set up multiple bridging of speakers, there many ways to bridge multiple speakers to HIFI Amplifier without any disadvantage. You just have to select a speaker selector switch. A four-zone switch will allow up to 4 speakers to get connected at the same time. How these speakers are wired is again depends on the resistance of the speakers. One thing that should be kept in mind is that speaker selector switch work under 100 watts it is used for multi-rooms like in the home theater or in cafes.

Methods to Bridge the Speakers:

The following are the methods to bridge the multiple speakers with one amplifier;

  • Matching the resistance of the speaker with each other this normally the best method but its most expensive one
  • Combine the speakers in parallel or series in such a way that the resistance will become 4 ohms

Conclusion:

In the end, if you want to bridge your speakers with an amplifier, it all depends on the resistance of the speakers and the outcome of the amplifier. However, it is good to calculate the resistance and the outcome of the amplifier to be satisfied with what the outcome will be. You should know at which resistance the parallel wiring will be helpful or at which resistance series wiring will be helpful. If you don’t know about the power output you should use speaker selector or matching volume controls. With the resistance of 4 ohms amplifier needs to deliver 5 amperes to produce the power of 100 watts
